It's a Small World

For it matters not how small the beginning may seem to be:
what is once done well is done forever.
Henry David Thoreau

I said to the almond tree, "Sister, speak to me of God,"
and the almond tree blossomed.
Nikos Kazantzakis / Report to Greko

One of the small things I try to do, is to "send love" within lucid dreams. A lucid dream is one in which the dreamer is fully aware that he or she's dreaming. In the Summer of 1988, at the behest of circumstances, I tried to "send love" for the first time...

I stood, within the dream, and tried to focus my love on world leaders. (I'm not sure, but it feels more like acting as a lens rather than a projector -- quite the palpable sensation but hard to describe.) With my eyes closed, I reached out to the Middle East, the Soviet Union, and America before I was interrupted. I felt the love pouring forth as I embraced each leader in turn. Then an unexpected small voice inquired:

Would you please send love to Jimmy Hayes?

(I don't remember the actual name she used.)

I opened my eyes (within the dream) and saw before me a little girl with blonde hair. She looked to be about five years old. Surprised to see her, I asked:

How did you know I was sending love?

To which she replied, with a matter-of-fact countenance:

Because you were shining like a rainbow.

To this day I regret not fulfilling her request (the dream ended there). I do, however, remain astonished by her answer. And I don't know how to make this make sense, but, even though she was in my dream, I don't think I dreamed her.

Innocence, sometimes leaps to correct conclusions
when knowledge makes one resist with all one's might.
—David Brin & Gregory Benford / Heart of the Comet

Pay attention to the whispers of your soul.
Trust them as you would a map, because that's what they are.
—Andrew Heller

Experience is not what happens to you.
It's what you do with what happens to you.
Aldous Huxley

And, once again, Mother Teresa's sublime sentiment shines with an undeniable truth:

We can do no great things—
only small things with great love.
