Sunday night's House of Blues featured the Blues Brothers and the music that inspired Jake and Elwood. I was rockin' in the garage while sorting through the accumulated jumble of junk, long-lost tools, and other assorted (and mostly forgotten) artifacts.

Lots of good memories in the physical and musical surroundings. What really struck me though was the sign-off Dan used. Man, shades of Scene Beyond Dreams and the resurgent message I've come to be reacquainted with.

Not that anyone ever gets, much less believes that quilt-like story I've assembled. No matter. It's not really meant for mass consumption.

Anyway, Aykroyd's, or more correctly, Elwood Blues' last words of the show were:

Jake and I truly were, and still are, on a mission from God.

I believe him.

Have you noticed how many Superman songs are currently spinning?
Here's one of my favorites from Five For Fighting:

I can't stand to fly / I'm not that naive
I'm just out to find / The better part of me
I'm more than a bird / I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy / To be me

I wish that I could cry / Fall upon my knees
Find a way to lie / About a home I'll never see
It may sound absurd / But don't be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed / But won't you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
And it's not easy / To be me

Up, up and away / Away from me
Well it's all right / You can all sleep sound tonight
I'm not crazy / Or anything

I can't stand to fly / I'm not that naive
Men weren't meant to ride / With clouds between their knees
I'm only a man in a silly red sheet / Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet / Looking for special things inside of me
Inside of me / Inside of me...

I'm only a man in a funny red sheet / I'm only a man looking for a dream
I'm only a man in a funny red sheet / And it's not easy
It's not easy / To be me
-- Superman

See, besides being a Super Hero
Superman's quite the metaphor

The day after The Matrix was released in the Bay Area
I posted the following
On that aforementioned bulletin board
(Ghastly grammar and all)

Here's a point blank fer ya
The Matrix
That movie that's out now
Is a superstar story
With a big S
You know
On the chest
Where the heart is
The battle at the corner of Pisgah and Diablo

Go
Don't think about it
Just go
Watch the metaphors you heard me talkin' about
Over and over
It's another Peter Pancake story
With its own cruel hook

Hmmm... talkin' to myself again
More of that goin' on here

I only seen it once so far
But listen when that name is tossed around
Sure seemed like a lot of residual references hangin' in the air
Like leanin' on a door with a cross on it
Gettin' asked that question
Or bein' on the other side of it
Sleepin' while that askin's goin' on

At least I understand that Fixx song at last
Red or Blue?
Stand or Fall?
There's a difference

Indeed

Been resisting this entry for the usual silly reason:

What will people say?

I love what Berthold Auerbach has to say about that foolish fear:

In these words lies the tyranny of the world,
the whole destruction of our natural disposition,
the oblique vision of our minds.
These four words hold sway everywhere.

He's right, don'tcha think?

So I've been mired in trepidation. Silly, eh? Even with all the talk of visions and messages in music and the rest of these ramblings, I still get nervous sometimes when it comes to spillin' the beans.

Anyway, to get to the point, BlindEye has his usual unusual angle on the Superman metaphor. Written when we still lived in Walnut Creek, the story seems to apply to our current theme. If you're interested, here's the shortcut.

There, I said it.

Yeah, yeah, I know it sounds crazy. So what else is new? At least now my conscience will have one less thing to nag about.

And thanks to this online notebook, there's one more thing that that little voice in my head can't berate me for ignoring anymore.

Now I can enjoy our little vacation with a few less worries.
