Codes Opening the Sealed Book A Hole in the Air You're starting to get an idea of my ulterior motives, eh? Well, some of 'em at any rate. Just got an email from a friend who reminded me that the preceding story wasn't my only chance, just the first one. He's right, you know. An interesting real-time "coincidence" as that was one of the points I was planning on making at this juncture. Actually, it's one of the points I AM making by opening up and spilling the beans. Do you think I write about this weird stuff without a good reason? I'm about to begin my last semester of student teaching. In January I'll be fully credentialled and looking for a full-time teaching position. Do you think I don't know that all of this might be used as a weapon against me at some point in the future? Here's a paragraph from David Brin's Earth that might help to illuminate the dilemma: A man's reputation is important. Especially in my field. People understand play, of course. So I was careful to make clear that's all I was doing, playing with an idea! It's quite another thing to say, this is what happened. I didn't do that. Ah, but unlike Logan Eng, I did do that just two pages ago. Remember? Yeah, yeah, I know that sounds crazy. With a nod to the delusions of grandeur diagnosis and all the related schizoid implications, I'm telling you that that's what happened. So why, you might ask, do I do it? Why purposefully expose myself, so to speak, in such a public forum when I KNOW it might come back to haunt me? The answer -- my answer -- is that it's the only way out. Well, it's the only way that I can see. Honesty isn't just the best policy here, it's the only one. Taken out of context, there's a multitude of individual idiosyncratic details that might be used to hang my professional hide. Taken as a whole... See? Sure the whole story's about as weird as they come, but if you look -- really look -- it should have a core of credibility built on an honest longing to understand. Besides, getting fired for being weird isn't my real concern. For whatever reason, I've been shown things. Consider, from this page: 040596 If you notice the date, that happened about a year before I'd heard of the Bible Code -- before it was even published. Took me a while after I read the book to begin to wonder if those spiralling letters were somehow connected to the story. Plus, there are many entries in my notebook referring to "shifting patterns." I kept writing: It feels like I'm being taught some kind of code. No, I haven't yet come to understand what it is I'm "being taught," and yes, it's possible that there's nothing mysterious going on -- that I just have an over-active imagination, but I've come to believe that the story, if there is in fact a story, is more important than "maintaining appearances."
